Alice in Wonderland

This is well cool. The BFI (British Film Institute) have managed to restore and capture most of the oldest version of Alice in Wonderland ever made.
First shown in 1903 it currently stands at a whacking 107 years old! Sadly some of it was lost, leaving 8 of the original 12 minutes of footage still extant and watchable. Reading up on it it seems that the film was made some 8 years after the birth of cinema (which is pretty cool..) and because of the abnormal length of the reel in both time and physical dimensions (a grand total of 800 feet of film) it was regularly shown in parts rather than all together. The brother in law has taken off on the first leg of his travels. We dropped him to the airport today, where he’s catching his first flight from Dublin to Madrid, and the Madrid to Santiago, Chile. It sounds like a really cool trip, cant wait to do something like that myself, though it’ll have to be after the wedding, when herself is finished in college. You can track him down to his latest wibblings at Blake’s Crazy Adventures. On the bright side I’m planning on going over to meet him along the way, sometime around April/May, definitely looking forward to that one. Week long session of beer and… beer!

An old college buddy is also tripping the light fantastic at the moment, though he’s coming towards the end of his wanderings rather than the start. Over the last few months I’ve been reading about his exploits over at Project X, and its made for some really interesting reading, particularly the stuff on Tibet, Asia, all of those places, will definitely be hitting some of them on our travels!

Until I can find some better way of tracking his movements this will have to do for a starting point…

Hallelujlah I passed and its all over, no more assignments or late night exam cramming. Deadly.

Christmas is six days away. There will be eating and presents. Glorious it will be.

Its a terrible thing. Why can’t we get our mucus glands removed? I ask you… in this day and age should I really have to sit on my couch smoothering with a head cold, completely unable to breathe?

Gwildor and the High Aldwyn

As a lover of both cheesy 80’s movies, and cheesy 80’s cartoons, and of course the 80’s overall, I have recently been watching some of the old classics again, like He-Man: Masters of the Universe and Willow, and to my nostalgic delight I discovered that He-Man’s miniscule sidekick Gwildor and his eminence the High Aldwyn are in fact one and the same person: Billy Barty. God bless ye Billy. You are a legend….

Where is the Superman?

It should be noted before I go off on my rant that I am a bit of a Superman fanatic – There is no other superhero that can ever come close to bettering him in my eyes. It always surprises me a little though, the attitudes to the different heros and their various personas.

Take for example Batman – a hero certainly, but a dark and moody, broody type of a chap. Most people I know consider Batman to be cooler than Superman, and this tends to follow through for most of the mainline heros out there – The darker, cooler, crankier, etc… that they are, the more popular they tend to be. It seems to be a case of we want our heros, much like our celebrities and so on, to misbehave and be “bad boys” in order to be worthy of our adulation.

But why? What is it about the bad boy mystique that attracts us over the simple messages espoused by others like good old Clark? Its something thats fascinated me for a long time, and has (it seems to me anyway..) strong ties into people’s morbid fascination with fame and celebrity, the need to believe in the supernatural, and all of that other jazz.

A related topic is the way that Superman, being damn near omnipotent, omnisicient, and pretty much omnipresent, is frequently portrayed as a Messiah figure. Think about it – people worship him, pray to him for salvation, curse him when things go wrong; he is the effective manifest saviour of the world, and because of his nature he can never back down from that mile high pedestal which the masses have placed him on. This in itself is a massive research topic, and one deserving of a post all of it’s own. A nice little weekend project I feel
